10.05.2012, Fitzroy Crossing – Willara Road House

In Fitzroy Crossing war eine interessante Camp-Kitchen. Da wir im Einflussbereich des Rivers waren, sind alle Räumlichkeiten des Campingplatzes auf kleinen Hügeln. So auch die Camp-Kitchen und auch die Toiletten. Dieses Mal haben wir nach dem Frühstück das Motorrad von einem Hügel aus angeschoben.

Wir sind dann an den Geike Gorge. Dort haben wir eine ca. zwei stündige Wanderung unternommen. Wir sind zuerst an dem Bergrücken und anschließend am Fluss entlang zurückgelaufen.



Am Willara Roadhaus sehr günstig für 15 $ übernachtet. Wir haben ein Paar aus Taiwan getroffen die mit einer großen BMW unterwegs waren. Jeff und Michele fahren um ganz Australien. Jeff ist mit dem Motorrad auch schon durch Rußland nach Europa, durch Nord-, Mittel- und Südamerika gefahren.

11.05.2012, Willara Road House – Broome

Morgens haben wir an Gerhards Motorrad herum repariert. Dann hat Jeff entdeckt, dass weder der Anlasser noch sonst etwas kaputt war sondern ganz einfach die Batterie komplett trocken war. Nachdem Wasser nachgefüllt war ist der Motor sofort angesprungen.





Wir sind dann relativ zügig nach Broom weiter gefahren. Am Cable Beach haben wir uns den Sonnenuntergang angeschaut.

12.05.2012, Broome – Pardoo Road House

Wir konnten nur sehr schlecht schlafen. Es war relativ laut und unheimlich schwül. In der Nacht hatten wir immer noch um die 30°. Unser Zelt war am nächsten Morgen klatschnass und zwar von innen und von außen. Es war ekelhaft.

Wir haben uns den Sonnenaufgang angeschaut und Fotos davon geschossen.





Wir sind 460 km bis zum Pardoo Roadhouse gefahren.

Abends haben wir uns mit den Bediensteten des Roadhouses unterhalten, die alle aus verschiedenen Teilen der Erde stammen.

Sehr interessant ist, das am 17. März 2012 das Roadhouse von einem Tornado heimgesucht und komplett zerstört wurde. Inzwischen ist Einiges wieder aufgebaut und das Roadhouse selbst funktioniert wieder ganz gut.

13.05.2012, Pardoo Road House – Karinjini NP

Port Hedland ist ein reiner Eisenerz-Transportort. An diesem Ort werden Mio. Tonnen von Erz nach China verladen.

Unser nächster Stopp war im Karinjini Nationalpark . Die ersten 300 km nach Port Hedland waren furchtbar langweilig. Eben und immer nur geradeaus. Aber die letzten ca. 100 km waren sehr schön.





Der Campingplatz im Nationalpark war jedoch enttäuschend ausgestattet, keine Tische, keine Dusche, kein Strom und kein Wasser.

04.Mai 2012, Katherine- Kakadu Nationalpark

Wir sind in den Kakadu - Nationalpark gefahren.



Nach einer kurzen Wanderung zu einem Lookout sind wir direkt nach Corinda. Wir wollten in Corinda übernachten, allerdings hat die Übernachtung zu viel gekostet. Daher sind wir auf einen anderen Zeltplatz und waren dort fast die einzigen Gäste. Uns war auch schnell klar warum. Denn es gab Millionen von Moskitos.

Wir wollten vor Sonnenuntergang unbedingt noch eine kleine Wanderung machen und haben daher eine 2 km lange Wanderung durch hohes Gras gemacht und ständig Angst gehabt auf eine Schlange zu treten.


05.Mai 2012, Kakadu Nationalpark – Darwin

In Corinda selbst gibt es in ca. 1 km Entfernung ein Kulturzentrum, das wir uns angeschaut haben.

Es war sehr interessant zu erfahren wie sich die Aboriginals seit 50.000 Jahren in diesem Nationalpark ernährt haben und wie sie gelebt haben.


Unsere Bootstour haben wir dann gegen 11:00 Uhr angetreten. Unser Bootsführer war selbst ein Aboriginal und konnte uns sehr viel erklären. Wir haben viele Tiere gesehen: Krokodile, Kormorane, Störche, einen Seeadler und auch eine nur zu dieser Jahreszeit blühende Lilienart.







Nach der Tour haben wir uns dann wieder auf den Weg nach Darwin gemacht. Wir sind an diesem Tag noch fast 400 km bis nach Darwin gefahren.

Auf dem Campingplatz war die Überraschung groß, als wir plötzlich Alois und Inge wieder getroffen haben. Nach dem Abendessen haben sie sich zu uns gesetzt und wir haben zusammen mit ihren Kindern Maxi und Toni den Abend verbracht.

06. Mai 2012, Darwin – Katherine

Nach dem Frühstück haben wir zwei Deutsche getroffen die schon seit fünf Monaten in Australien unterwegs sind. Kai und seine Freundin Sandra kommen aus Esslingen.

Darwin selbst ist keine so schöne Stadt und hat eigentlich seine Größe nur der Lage zu verdanken. Durch die Minenarbeiter und durch die Ex- und Importe über den Hafen kommen relativ viele Menschen nach Darwin.

Auf direktem Weg sind wir dann zurück nach Katherine gefahren.



07. Mai 2012, Katherine- Victoria River Road House

Wir sind ca. 30 km zum Katherine Gorge gefahren. Dort haben wir eine Wanderung erst entlang dem Katherine River und dann hoch auf eine Aussichtsplattform gemacht.

Danach ging es in Richtung Westaustralien und wir sind bis Viktoria River Roadhouse gefahren.





08.05.2012, Victoria River Road House – Dom Dom (freier Campingplatz)

Leider ist an diesem Morgen das Motorrad nicht angesprungen. Geoffrey musste daher anschieben. Wir sind dann auf direktem Weg nach Kununarra gefahren.



Nach dem Einkauf ist das Motorrad leider wieder nicht angesprungen. Glücklicherweise waren Kai und Sandra, die wir schon in Darwin getroffen hatten, zur Stelle, und haben Geoffrey geholfen das Motorrad anzuschieben. Wir haben uns auf dem Don Don Campingplatz (freier Campingplatz) verabredet, um dort gemeinsam zu übernachten. Dieser Campingplatz ist ca. 80 km südlich von Kununarra.



Es war schön mit Kai und Sandra in „schwäbisch“ den Abend zu verbringen und leckeres Apfelsaftschorle zu trinken.


09.05.2012, Dom Dom – Fitzroy Crossing


Ganz früh am Morgen versucht das Motorrad zu reparieren. Dennoch ist das Motorrad nicht angesprungen. Kai und Sandra haben morgens dann noch auf uns gewartet, bis wir alles zusammengepackt hatten. Kai hat Geoffrey beim Anschieben geholfen.

Wir sind dann ohne großen Stopp weiter bis Fitzroy Crossing. Wir haben an diesem Tag unsere längste Strecke, insgesamt 575 km zurückgelegt.

04.Mai 2012, Katherine to Kakadu National park
After a short walk to a lookout we drove directly to Corinda. We wanted to stay in Corinda, but it was too expensive. So we drove to another camping area and seemed to be just about the only guests. We realised quickly why. There were millions of mosquitos around.

Before sunset we really wanted to go on a little walk, so we went on a 2 km walk through high grass and were very alert not to step on a snake.



05.Mai 2012, Kakadu Nationalpark – Darwin

In Corinda itself there's a Culture centre close (1 km ), that we had a look at.

It was very interesting to find out how Aboriginals have been living in the national park for 50 000 years and what they ate in the national park.

We attended our boat trip at about 11 o'clock. Our guide was an aboriginal himself and was able to explain a lot. We saw many animals: crocodiles, cormorants, storcks, a sea-eagle and a type of lilies that only blossoms to this time of the year.







After the boat trip we continued to Darwin. On this day we almost drove 400 km to Darwin though.
The surprise was great when we met Alois and Inge on the camp site again. After dinner they came around to our table and we spent the evening with their kids, Maxi and Toni.

6. Mai 2012, Darwin to Katherine

After breakfast we met two Germans who have been travelling through Australia for 5 months. Kai and Sandra, are from Esslingen.

Darwin itself isn't a very nice town and only owes it's size to it's location. Because of the mineworkers and the ex- and imports through the port a lot of people come to Darwin.



We drove back to Katherine directly after that.

7. Mai 2012, Katherine- Victoria River Road House

We drove about 30 km to Katherine Gorge. We went on a walk along the Katherine River and up to a lookout platform.

Then we went in direction West Australia and we drove to the Viktoria River Roadhouse.





08.05.2012, Victoria River Road House – Dom Dom (free camp site)

Unfortunately Gerhards motorcycle didn't start up this morning. So Geoffrey had to push start the bike. Then we drove directly to Kununarra .

After we had done the shopping the bike didn't start up again. Luckily Kai and Sandra, whom we had already met in Darwin, were there and able to help Geoffrey push start the bike. We agreed on meeting at the Dom Dom camp site (free camp site), to spend the night together. This camp site is about 80 km South of Kununarra.



It was very enjoyable to spend the night in “swabian” and drink yummy Apfelsaftschorle.

09.05.2012, Dom Dom – Fitzroy Crossing

Tried to fix the motorbike early in the morning. The bike still dind't start. Kai and Sandra waited for us in the morning, until we had packed all our things. Kai helped Geoffrey push start the bike.

We drove to Fitzroy Crossing, without any major stops. This day we rode our longest passage, all in all 575 km.

1. Mai 2012 Alice Springs to Devils Marbles

On this day we had about 400 km to go, so we drove North quite briskly.

We stopped at the pub of Barrow Creek. There we met Steven, an English man, who was also doing his travels on a motorbike. From him we received some important hints for our travels. After that we drove to the Devils Marbles.



Arrived at sunset. On this free camping area there were at least 150 people and approximately 75 camper vans and camp trailers or similar vehicles.

2. Mai 2012 Devils Marbels to Newcastle Water

We wanted to see the Devils Marbles at sunrise, so we forced ourselves out of bed early.



It's fascinating how this granite formed into balls through weather influences.

On this day our aim was to ride about 400 km. We achieved this and camped just after Elliot (18 km) on a free camping area next to the road.


3. Mai 2012 Newcastle Waters to Katherine

We got away early and drove the 400 km to Katherine quickly. Here there is a tropical climate, a humidity of about 80 – 90 % and temperatures around 30 ° C, in total it's very humid.

There are hot springs directly next to the camp site. We bathed in it. It's very funny how warm water comes out of the ground here. The very large spiders in the surrounding bush meant that everybody stayed in the water nicely.

1. Mai 2012 Alice Springs nach Devils Marbles

An diesem Tag hatten wir noch ca. 400 Km vor uns und sind relativ zügig in Richtung Norden gefahren.

Unterwegs haben wir am Pub von Barrow Creek gestoppt. Dort haben wir Steven, einen Engländer, getroffen, der auch mit dem Motorrad unterwegs war. Von ihm haben wir wichtige Hinweise für unsere Weiterreise erhalten. Wir sind dann noch weiter bis zu den Devils Marbels gefahren.



Bei Sonnenuntergang dort angekommen.



Auf diesem kostenlosen Zeltplatz waren allerdings mindestens 150 Leute und geschätzt ca. 75 Wohnmobile bzw. Wohnwagen oder ähnliche Fahrzeuge.

2. Mai 2012 Devils Marbels nach Newcastle Water

Wir wollten die Devils Marbles bei Sonnenaufgang sehen und haben uns daher früh aus den Federn gequält.Es ist faszinierend, wie dieser Granit zerfallen ist und durch Witterung zu Kugeln geformt wurde.



Auch an diesem Tag war unser Ziel ca. 400 km zurückzulegen. Dies ist uns auch gelungen und kurz hinter Elliot (18 km) haben wir dann wiederum auf einem freien Campingplatz direkt neben der Straße übernachtet.



3. Mai 2012 Newcastle Waters nach Katherine

Wir sind früh weggekommen und haben dann sehr zügig 400 Km bis Katherine zurückgelegt.Hier ist tropisches Klima d.h. eine Luftfeuchtigkeit von ca. 80-90 % und Temperaturen um die 30°. D.h. es ist sehr schwül.

Direkt neben dem Campingplatz ist eine Mineral bzw. Thermalquelle. Wir haben darin gebadet. Es ist sehr witzig wie hier warmes Wasser aus dem Boden kommt . Insbesondere die vielen großen Spinnen´am Ufer haben aber dafür gesorgt dass man sich schön im Wasser aufgehalten hat.

25.April 2012 Coober Pedy to Erldunda

We started up around 8:45. Non-stop we rode 234km. With an average speed of about 90 km /h we moved quite quickly. All in all we managed to ride 480 km on this day. Even arrived in Erldunda before sunset.

We tried to call Marlene by the normal phone box, which is unbelievably difficult in Australia. She was relieved to hear that we were alright.

26.April 2012 Erldunda to Yulara

Erldunda to Yulara is 264 km. There we put up our tent, changed our clothes and went to the Uluru (Ayers Rock) only with normal pants and a leather jacket on. We respected the Aboriginals wish, and did not climb Uluru. Instead we took a 7 km return tour to a sacred site of the Aboriginals.





Then we rode around the Uluru on our motorcycles and watched the sunset.

27 April 2012 Yulara to Kings Canyon

We got up before sunrise to watch the sunrise on the Uluru. We were a bit late, but saw the Uluru in beautiful red and the Kata Tjuta (Olgas) in the back round.



After that we rode to Kata Tjuta directly. There we went on a 3 h walk.



To Kings Canyon, our destination for this day, there were still about 270 km. We didn't quite make it, so we spent the night in a free campsite along the way.


28. April 2012 Kings Canyon

Because of the low temperature (5°C) we got up early. Quickly had breakfast, packed everything together and drove off. We were in the Kings Canyon National park by 9:30. Had a beautiful walk to a spring in the Kings Canyon and saw a snake there as well, probably a python.



Later we went on a 3 h walk around the Kings Canyon itself. There were beautiful pictures we could take of this geologically very interesting area.







In the Kings Canyon Resort we fueled up and got a permit for a dirt track in aboriginal land. The fee was 5,50 $ per person, that only was valid for the 28. April.

That meant, we had to face about 150 km of dirt road that day. We had to realize quickly that we weren't going to be able to do that so we found a free camping spot with a good view of the valley in time.

29. April 2012 Kings Canyon to Alice Springs

Got onto the dirt track early. Some parts of the track were easy, some very eshausting. Around 1 o'clock we finally had left the sand and gravel road ( after about 135 km ).



Then a really nice road through the West Mc Donald Ranges followed.


30. April 2012 Alice Springs

Got up early, had breakfast at fairly low temperature (around 8°C). Then we mended our tent, because it was ripped at some places.

25. April 2012 Coober Pedy nach Erldunda

Los ging es gegen 8:45 Uhr. Nonstop sind wir dann 234 km am Stück gefahren. Mit einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von ca. 90 sind wir rasch voran gekommen.Insgesamt haben wir an diesem Tag ca. 480 km zurückgelegt. Noch vor Sonnenuntergang sind wir in Erldunda angekommen.



Durch den kräftigen Niederschlag gibt es hier Kürbisse


Über das normale Telefon haben wir versucht Marlene anzurufen, was in Australien unheimlich kompliziert ist. Sie war erleichtert, als sie erfuhr, dass es uns gut geht.

26. April 2012 Erldunda nach Yulara

Es sind 264 km von Erldunda bis nach Yulara.



Es gab auch ein paar Kamele



Am Uluru Resort haben wir das Zelt aufgestellt, unsere Kleider gewechselt und sind dann nur mit Lederjacke und normaler Hose an den Uluru (Ayers Rock).



Wir haben den Wunsch der Aboriginals respektiert und den Uluru nicht bestiegen.
Stattdessen haben wir eine sehr schöne Tour von ca. 7 km retour an eine "heilige Stelle" der Aboriginals gemacht.





Wir haben dann mit dem Motorrad noch eine Runde um den Uluru gedreht und den Sonnenuntergang beobachtet.



27.4.2012 Yulara nach Kings Canyon

Wir sind schon vor Sonnenaufgang aufgestanden um den Sonnenaufgang am Uluru zu beobachten.
Wir waren etwas spät, haben den Uluru aber noch in wunderschönem Rot sehen können und auch die Kata Tjuta (Olgas) im Hintergrund.Wir sind dann auf direktem Weg zu Kata Tjuta. Dort haben wir eine 3 h Wanderung unternommen.



Bis zu unserm Ziel für diesen Tag, dem Kings Canyon waren es noch ca. 270 km. Dies haben wir aber nicht mehr an diesem Tag ganz geschafft, also haben wir auf einem freien Campingplatz die Nacht verbracht.



28. April 2012 Kings Canyon

Durch die Kälte (5°C) sind wir schon früh aufgestanden. Rasch gefrühstückt, zusammen gepackt und losgefahren. Gegen 9:30 Uhr waren wir dann bereits im Nationalpark Kings Canyon. Einen wunderschönen Spaziergang zu einer Quelle im Kings Canyon gemacht und dort auch eine Schlange, vermutlich eine Pyton, gesehen.



Wie haben dann eine ca. 3 h Tour um den eigentlichen Kings Canyon unternommen.



Es waren fantastische Bilder, die wir von diesem geologisch sehr interessanten Gebiet machen konnten.





Im Kings Canyon Ressort haben wir getankt und uns die Erlaubnis für einen Dirt Track in Aboriginiegebiet gekauft. Die Gebühr hat jeweils 5,50 $ gekostet und war eigentlich nur für den 28. April gültig.



Das bedeutete für diesen Tag, dass wir noch ca. 150 km auf Dirt Track bewältigen sollten. Wir haben aber schnell einsehen müssen, dass dies nicht ging und daher noch rechtzeitig einen freien Campingplatz mit wunderschöner Aussicht über das Tal gefunden.

29. April 2012 Kings Canyon nach Alice Springs

Früh sind wir auf den Dirt Track. Dieser war teilweise gut zu fahren, teilweise auch wieder unheimlich anstrengend. Gegen 13:00 Uhr hatten wir dann endlich die Schotter und Sandpiste hinter uns (nach ca. 135 km). Dann folgte eine wunderschöne Strecke entlang den West Mac Donald Ranges.

30. April 2012 Alice Springs

Früh aufgestanden, bei relativ niedriger Temperatur (ca. 8°C) gefrühstückt. Wir haben dann unser Zelt repariert, da es an manchen Stellen gerissen war.

On Wednesday we first of all went to Mildura Homestead. Gerhard has now taken photos of the homestead for the 4. time (1986, 1990, 2007, 2012).

Shopped, fuelled up and drove in direction Broken Hill. Almost the whole time wilst riding, we drove at 110 km/h, which is very exhausting with the strong sidewinds.

We arrived in Broken Hill at about 3 o'clock and put our tent up immediately. Drove back to town quickly and tried to capture the sunset. We wanted to take some photos of the sunset on the "actual" Broken Hill. We didn't find the right entry though and had to take an about 8 km long other way until we finally reached the top of the hill after another 2 km.

On Thursday 19. April we rode from Broken Hill to Orroroo.

After a short walk through Broken Hill we rode in direction South Australia. In Orroroo we quickly made contact to Alois and Inge. Both are Germans who've been living in Australia for many years. Alois is a passionate motorcyclist. He lost his right arm in a collision with a roobar. Although he has this disability, he drove around Australia 2 years ago on the same bike as we have, the Kawasaki KLR 650. He has a special set-up for his left arm on his bike. He has to accelerate, brake and use the clutch with his left hand. After dinner we were invited over to Alois and Inge for a glass of wine. It was really nice to have a good conversation in German again

20. April Orroroo to Wilpena



Alois and Inge invited us over in the morning for a cup of coffee. Alois helped us after that with making the bikes ready to go.

From Orroroo we continued our journey to Hawker. There we checked out the road conditions. All roads we had picked for riding, were open.



Arrived in the afternoon at Wilpena in the Filders Ranges. In order to capture the sunset we went on a 7km walk to a lookout. But it was very cloudy that evening.

21.April Wilpena to Parachilna

Because we wanted to get started early to climb the St.Mary Peak, the highest mountain in Wilpena Pound, we got up at 6:15. Before the sunrise we started walking on the 7.6 km long walk up to the St.Mary Peak. The path isn't flat though, you have to overcome a lot of steep passages until you reach the top at 1177 m above sea level. After arriving at the top we didn't have such a good view, because there was a thick layer of clouds around us.



On the road again, many kangaroos jumped over the streets and 2 kangaroos almost jumped into
Geoffrey's bike. Luckily nothing happened and he could avoid a collision after performing a full brake.




After Blinman we had to ride a fairly difficult dirt track to Parachilna. This about 25 km long track took about one hour to ride.



22.April Parachilna to Marree

Got to Leigh Creek pretty quickly. Leigh Creek is interesting in the respect that it was shifted from it's original location, because cole was found there. Leaving Leigh Creek we drove on about 30km of sealed road after we continued on dirt track to Marree.



About 2 km after Marree Gerhard's bike just suddenly went out. We figured out quickly that it must be an electrical issue. We just didn't know what caused it. Luckily an Australian could help us. Daron is an Australian who was traveling with his wife Carol and his 2 kids. He gave us some fuses and checked the battery if it was still alright. The battery was ok, but the main fuse was burnt thru.
Then we had to take off all luggage, take off the fuel tank and check all the cables. Luckily Daron found the cause for the problem after 1 hour. A cable had rubbed on the frame and produced a short circuit. Then we assembled the bike again and got all luggage back on the bike. But then we noticed that we had forgotten the rubber protection of the fuel tank, so we had to take everything off again, take the tank off and put in the rubber protection. All in all we spent 2,5 hours fixing the bike. This time loss meant we couldn't get very far. We planned to reach Williams Creek on that day, but only managed to ride another 40 km until sunset. We camped in the bush that night.

23.April Maree to Coober Pedy

As there has been a lot of rain west of the Dividing Range in Queensland, Lake Eyre was full of water. This can only be seen about every 10 years. Luckily we saw Lake Eyre South full of water, and Gerhard walked to the shore of the lake.



On difficult tracks we drove on to Williams Creek. We fuelled up there. The price per litre of ULP was 2,30 $, the highest price we've paid for petrol.



In Williams Creek we had something to drink and then made our way to Coober Pedy. The first 30 km section was very difficult, and torture for bike and rider.



There were sandbanks and sand dunes constantly. We both almost fell off our bike a few times.

After about 60 km the track got better. We really wanted to get to Coober Pedy in daylight, but didn't make it. We rode the last 20 km to Coober Pedy in the dark. There we fell tired and exhausted into bed.

24. April Coober Pedy

We first had long showers ( 4 min ) , had some breakfast , washed our dirty washing and started on the bikes.

The bikes had to be serviced at many parts. All screws had to be tightened, the air filters had to be washed, cleaned and oiled. The chain also had to he cleaned and greased. We adjusted some cables and checked all parts.

In the afternoon we had a tour of an Opal mine. We got a tour in German there.



Because we wanted to find some Opal, we went to some poured out hills and noddled for some opal. We even found some small Opals.
